Greenroof Plants
Greenroofs are lightweight, earth friendly, low-maintenance vegetated roof systems that are alternatives to conventional roofing. They provide a cost-effective method for addressing rising utility costs, summer shortages and the Urban Heat Island effect. Greenroofs absorb heat instead of reflecting it back into the atmosphere thus cooling the air. The actual roof temperature is no higher than the mean air temperature. By acting as a more natural sponge, the greenroof replicates Mother Nature in slowing runoff. They absorb up to 90% of the rainwater from the roof, evaporating the water back into the atmosphere. When saturated, they allow clear water to slowly flow into the storm sewers instead of the “rush’ off of a typical roof. This slows silting that is a major cause of environmental damage to our rivers and bays. They absorb carbon and other pollutants from the air, acting as green air filters. www.greenroofs.com
Principal Green Roof Technology Components Commercial green roofs are not roof gardens; many of them can not take foot traffic. Instead, they are like green skins, layers of vegetative matter that grow directly on rooftops. Wayne’s Wholesale Nursery has grown Greenroof plants for several high profile jobs in the Washington, D.C. area. We were selected by The Davey Tree Co. to provide the sedum used on the New U.S. Department of Transportation building in Washington. The 138,000 sedum grown by us, were delivered in the Summer of 2006. This is the largest greenroof in Washington D.C. and we were glad to be selected to provide the plant material. We have been providing plants for several other greenroof projects, including the National Institute of Health’s new parking garage. It's greenroof was completed in the spring of 2007.
